Several years ago, Christina Hoff Sommers wrote a great book entitled The War Against Boys. What she was getting at was the crusade to “improve” the socialization of boys so that they wouldn’t be so competitive, aggressive, and so on, thereby ensuring peace and harmony for the world. The book is worth reading.

Today, Rich Lowry has a good column on NRO in which he discusses the most recent manifestations of the war, namely legislation to ban “realistic” toy guns.

For now, bills like that are merely grandstanding by politicians, but it bespeaks a mindset that wreaks havoc wherever it appears: the belief that EVERYTHING can be improved with the application of some well-meaning government intervention.
