3. ORANGE COUNTY RAPE CRISIS CENTER TRAINING VOLUNTEERS
Do you like puppets? Do you love working with kids? Do you want to make a difference in their lives? If so, then come train one afternoon a week at the Orange County Rape Crisis Center. The reality is that 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18. There is something you can do to help!
For starters, you can help by stop using obviously inflated statistics. Come on — one in three? And before 18? (The next six years are no better, since “one in four” between the ages of 18 and 24 will be sexually assaulted.)
Everyone understands the seriousness of rape and sexual assault. You don’t need to exaggerate the amount of victims to impress on people the gravity of the problem. Lying about the extent of the problem only trivializes it.
