Yesterday, Rep. Sue Myrick joined the long list of politicians who don?t understand basic economics. She not only lashed out at fellow Republican, President Bush, but she also recanted her support of free trade because she said it no longer worked.

Free trade is like everything else in life (except the government): you can?t get something for nothing! You must either not trade with other countries, which only temporarily protects some manual labor jobs which consumers pay heftily for when they buy basic necessities, or you have free trade, which will rid the economy of non-competitive companies and lower the prices of basic necessities.

She continued her diatribe warning Americans to think twice before they bought foreign-made products from Target or Walmart simply because they were cheaper. But wait, if free trade no longer works all of the sudden, how are foreign-made products cheaper? And does she offer the same advice to unemployed textile workers. Let them eat cake, I mean, let them shop at Nordstroms, not Walmart!
