Parents as “advocates” in the district system

I just received an email from the WCPSS (Wake County Schools) Family Academy.

Parents are often the best educational advocates for their child. Research indicates that being involved in your child’s education has a positive correlation with being successful in school. The parents will learn how to be engaged in their child’s education.

This event is sponsored by WCPSS Family Academy. Please visit their website: http://www.wcpss.net/family-academy

This is a parent-only event.

If parents and guardians, “are often the best educational advocates for their child,” why don’t we allow them to choose the school that best meets the needs of their children?

The truth is that being an “advocate” will not get parents very far in a system that largely refuses their right to choose an alternative.
