Eric Owens of the Daily Caller documents the thoughtful, measured response at Tufts University to one student’s plea for free speech.

Late last month, a student at Tufts University proposed a resolution calling for free and untrammeled campus speech.

The student, sophomore Jake Goldberg, urged administrators and students at the fancypants school to reject ambiguous rules outlawing “hurtful words,” “acts of intolerance and hate,” “innuendos of a sexual nature” and the like.

Other students at Tufts who support restrictions on “hurtful words” and other free speech have responded to Goldberg’s resolution by taking to social media to call him an “ignorant fuckhead,” “meninist scum” and “a stain on the face of this campus.”

Censorship enthusiasts who want rules against “hurtful words” also directly emailed Goldberg to say “fuck you,” “fuck off” and “eat my ass,” reports The College Fix. …

… The students who support limitations on “hurtful” words and “hate” — and who called Goldberg a “fuckhead” and a “stain” — ranted their condemnatory statements on the Tufts Class of 2019 and Class of 2020 Facebook pages, according to The College Fix.

One Facebook commenter wrote: “who knew white cis men were so oppressed.”

Another indicted Goldberg for attempting to “gut Title IX and ensure that racial epitaphs are protected on campus.”

The world-historical irony of the situation is not lost on Goldberg.

“In their quest to try and stop me from altering the school’s policies, they broke almost every single one of them,” the sophomore told the Fix. “Students not only abused me online, but also in public, in class, and over email.”

“I want to engage in debate,” he added. “I assumed that a group of 18 to 24 year olds would understand the First Amendment, but I was wrong.”
