As many of us scramble to finish tax forms this weekend, we can take some comfort in learning that Saturday marks North Carolina’s Tax Freedom Day.

That’s the day the Tax Foundation has determined that North Carolinians have worked long enough to pay off the tax man for 2016. Now we can spend the rest of the year working to pay for food, clothing, shelter, and everything else in our household budgets.

If it seems a little disappointing that the first three-and-a-half months of your labor this year have gone toward paying tax bills, keep this in mind: North Carolina’s Tax Freedom Day arrives eight days earlier than the national Tax Freedom Day. The average American will work until April 24 to hit the milestone. (Those who live in Connecticut will have to wait nearly another month — until May 21 – to reach tax freedom.)
