Professor Per Bylund, who teaches at Baylor, explains in this piece why the left hates — and indeed hopes to kill — the discipline of economics. Why? Because, Bylund writes, “it points out that creating a better world through central planning, money-printing, and political manipulation is impossible.”

A few decades ago, I read a leftist review of a book by a market-oriented economist, the substance of which was that it is bad to point out to people the truths that things are scarce, trade-offs are inevitable, and politicians do a lousy job of making the necessary decisions. That spirit lives on. Leftists prefer ignorant people they can easily control to those who grasp economic reality.
