Charter schools throughout North Carolina are conducting their annual admissions lotteries.

Charters are required by law to choose students by lottery whenever the number of applications exceeds the number of seats.  It is a pretty common situation because charter schools are subject to statutory restrictions on enrollment growth.  Parental choice be damned!

Uwharrie Charter Academy in Asheboro had over 300 open seats and around 450 applicants.  Admittedly, Uwharrie applicants had decent odds.  A number of other charter schools in North Carolina have admission rates that rival Ivy League universities.
