At a fundraiser in her home last night, Gwyneth Paltrow is reported to have said it would be wonderful if we were able to give Obama all of the power that he needs to pass the things that he needs to pass.
Politics aside – regardless of whether we’re talking about Obama or Bush, no matter how much we may like or dislike a person’s policies – I think Paltrow would do well to remember Lord Acton‘s astute observation that “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
It would not be wonderful if we were able to give Obama – or anyone else – all the power that he needs. On the contrary, it would be frightening and dangerous.
