Law schools are a cartel that is protected by American Bar Association accrediting rules and state laws that (in most states including NC) make graduation from an ABA-approved law school the only route into the legal profession. The result is a lot of waste that benefits a few wealthy people at the expense of the rest of society. But because law school has been oversold at least as much as college in general, we now find that quite a few schools are on the brink of disaster. What to do?

That’s the subject of my latest Forbes piece.

The legal profession should be deregulated and law schools put to the test of the market. This is one of those issues where free market types can join forces with professed “liberals” who actually care about poor people — as opposed to those statist liberals who want to maintain their alliance with the big money interests such as the lawyers’ guild.
