N&R reports former Guilford County Superintendent Terry Grier —now superintendent of the Houston Independent School District—is trying to poach N.C. teachers:

Recruiting in North Carolina is “classic Terry Grier,” said Nora Carr, the chief of staff for Guilford County Schools.

“He’s always been very aggressive in recruiting top talent, and we have a lot of top talent in Guilford County,” Carr said.

…The starting salary for Houston teachers is $46,805 a year, according to an advertisement about the job fair published in the News & Observer of Raleigh.

That’s about $16,000 more than the starting salary in North Carolina. It’s also almost $12,000 higher than the starting salary for Guilford County Schools.

The national average teacher salary in 2012-13 was $56,383, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. North Carolina’s average salary is $45,947, one of the lowest in the nation, according to that data.

Carolina Plott Hound notes that nowhere in the ad —not in the N&R article, for that matter — is it mentioned that Texas has no state income tax. However, WNCN does mention that the cost of living in Houston —now the nation’s fourth-largest city— is higher than the cost of living in Raleigh, which is higher than the cost of living in Gboro.

But if it’s heat and humidity you’re looking for year-round….
