Guilford County Board of Education votes 5-4 to raise its salary by $775 per month. Voting for the raise were board members Jeff Belton, Carlvena Foster, Deena Hayes-Greene, Ed Price and Vice Chairman Amos Quick. Voting against the raise were board members Rebecca Buffington, Chairman Alan Duncan, Nancy Routh and Linda Welborn. Board members Sandra Alexander and Rebecca Buffington were absent.

N&R editorializes:

Seeking more money for themselves was a public relations and political blunder at a time when schools really do need and deserve more county dollars. Don’t they understand the important gesture made each year by their own superintendent, Maurice “Mo” Green? Since he took the job in 2008, he has turned down the annual salary increase his contract allows.

High Point Enterprise says the vote is a “a potentially controversial election-year move.” That’s true— only problem is three of the ‘yes’ votes who are up for reelection —-Belton, Price and Hayes-Greene —-are running unopposed.

Anybody still think it’s a bad idea to shake up school board elections?
