Orange Schools Superintendent Gerri Martin has resigned.

Martin will receive a $100,000 payment. Her contract was scheduled to run through June 2017, and she was making $151,337.88 a year.

Coffey said the board was not surprised and knew Martin might resign for two weeks. Why the contract was terminated is unclear. According to Martin’s contract, she was supposed to give at least 60 calendar days written notice before resigning.

When asked whether Martin had done a good job as superintendent, Coffey said: “No comment.”

Why did Martin leave? Possibly because of an ill mother, according to the story. I that is the case, I’m very sorry and wish the family the best.

That said, why did the county agree to pay her $100,000? Why would a contract have an “out” of that nature?
