  • A new Elon University Poll shows House Speaker Thom Tillis, R-Mecklenburg, gaining name recognition in his bid for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. Nearly two-thirds of registered voters, and 73 percent of self-identified Republicans, know who Tillis is. By comparison, only 26 percent of registered voters recognized the Rev. Mark Harris and 21 percent recognized Dr. Greg Brannon. The news isn’t as good for incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan, whose approval rating remains under water, with 35 percent approving her job in office and 47 percent disapproving.

  • Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who may run for president in 2016, endorsed Tillis, giving the three GOP front-runners big-name supporters. Months ago, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., endorsed Brannon and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee backed Harris.
