Poor people need more government help, right?

No, what they need is more freedom, argues Julian Adorney in this Freeman piece today.

Poor people would benefit directly from more freedom because government regulations often impede their efforts at improving themselves. They would also benefit indirectly, as greater freedom for other people would have beneficial consequences for them: more and better-paying job opportunities, less expensive and improved consumer goods.
