• A couple of days after Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan decried “outside special interest money” working to defeat her this fall, the oddly named Wolfheel Super PAC announced it would spend money to aid Hagan’s re-election. The fund is run by Democratic strategist Ben Chao, who also is running Super PACs backing vulnerable Sens. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Mark Pryor of Arkansas.

• Charlotte attorney Matt Arnold has announced he will challenge outspoken Sen. Bob Rucho, R-Mecklenburg, for the GOP nomination in the 39th District.

• Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who ran for president against John McCain, has endorsed fellow Baptist minister Mark Harris in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Hagan.

• Bruce Davis, a Democratic commissioner from High Point, may run against Laura Fjeld in the 6th Congressional District primary.

• Democrats Jane Hipps of Waynesville and Ron Robinson of Sylva will face off against Sen. Jim Davis, R-Macon, for the 50th District at the western edge of the state.
