United Van Lines  published their 37th Annual Migration Study last week.  The study “tracks the states the company’s customers move to and from during the course of the year.”  The top inbound states were

  1. Oregon
  2. South Carolina
  3. North Carolina
  4. District of Columbia
  5. South Dakota
  6. Nevada
  7. Texas
  8. Colorado

According to UVL, 58 percent of moves to North Carolina were inbound ones.  North Carolina was just a few percentage points lower than Oregon (61 percent) and South Carolina (60 percent).

The top outbound states were those with some of the highest taxes in the nation – New Jersey, Illinois, and New York.

Of course, there are limitations to the study.  Most notably, UVL does not attempt to determine why people moved in or out of a state or region.
