Scanning through some news articles I found one detailing Kentucky’s governor signing a bill to repeal the ban on Election Day alcohol sales.  Interestingly enough, the sales ban is from the pre-prohibition era when saloons served as polling stations.  Now, the only state in the Country with this ban on Election Day is South Carolina, who shows no intent to change its law.

I started looking at North Carolina more closely to see what other Blue Laws our state still enforces.  Interestingly enough, the 1961 General Assembly enacted a Sunday Closing Law but was deemed unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court in 1962.  Here are some interesting facts about North Carolina’s alcohol related Blue Laws:

  • NC is one of 12 states that ban Sunday liquor sales
  • NC is one of 6 states prohibiting spirits tastings at on or off-premise establishments
  • Alcohol cannot be sold at the same place as a Bingo game is being held
  • A mixed beverage permittee may advertise (by means of circular, newspaper, magazine, radio, and television) the price and a description or picture of mixed beverages, but may not include any name, display, picture or make reference to a particular spirits brand or company name.
