During today’s monthly State Board of Education meeting, an official from the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI) complained that members of the General Assembly always want to discuss North Carolina’s 65 percent community college remediation rate. She commented that she did not know where the numbers came from, but I suspect that she knows that they come directly from the NC Community College System (NCCCS).
Now, the NCCCS has proposed changes to their remediation placement policy. DPI is thrilled because the new policy will likely lower the remediation rate. That change will reflect favorably on the public school system. Presumably, it will reduce the number of uncomfortable questions asked by members of the legislature.
Interestingly, the DPI official said that a high school diploma does not guarantee that a student will meet the minimum requirements of admission to a NCCCS institution.
