Notices will go out in the mail to Buncombe County residents within the next week stating the property value for tax purposes. These values are expected to show significant changes from the current valuation, set in 2006. State law requires evaluations every 8 years, yet Buncombe County typically revalues every 4. Why didn’t they revalue in 2010 when home prices were much lower than the 2006 values? Tax director Gary Roberts recommended to the commissioners not revalue in 2010 stating, “sales data did not show enough differences in values to warrant the expense of revaluation.”
Interestingly enough, Buncombe County is not the only NC county to delay its revaluation since the Great Recession. In this local government report for FY2012-2013 there is a list of property tax rates in every county, including the year they were last re-valuated. There were a total of 27 counties that had not re-valuated their property tax rates since 2008.
