‘Tis the season to think of the less fortunate. This year, most of us are less fortunate. It is absurd to think we’re a free country anymore. We keep hearing 1/6 of the population is on food stamps. Last month, the USDA reported that 1/5 of American adults used food stamps in June. Kids get one or two free or reduced meals at school plus food to take home on weekends and holidays. Then, there are soup kitchens. With that kind of subsidy, the local daily printed today:
Americans spend an average of $151 on food per week, according to a recent Gallup poll.
That’s more than many bring home – to share. Is it a typo? Does it include a taxpayer’s contributions for food for others, or does it mean those who are spending are paying on average more than $200? What would a median and a range tell us? I know, government must obfuscate to allay widespread panic.
