A lot of people in the CLT power structure think that an American Airlines/US Airways merger would be good for Charlotte in that it will increase international air service from here. While undoubtedly flights to Europe from CLT would be quite different after such a merger and associated change in airline alliance, it doesn’t follow that that would mean there would be more flights to Europe. The reality is that American Airlines is fairly weak to Europe outside the UK. And as further proof of that, today it came out that American is ending service from New York City to Brussels effective early November. American had flown the route since May 2004.

Bonus observation: American also does not serve Amsterdam and has the grand total of one daily flight to Germany (it’s Dallas/Ft. Worth – Frankfurt). The airline only has a single flight to Dublin (it’s from Chicago) and even that’s summer seasonal only.
