The Obama administration has launched a Race to the Top competition for school districts (RTT-D).  School districts will compete for $400 million in federal moola.

Previously, only states could apply for Race to the Top (RttT) funds.  North Carolina received a four-year, $400 million RttT grant in 2010.

Whiteboard Advisors, a Washington, D.C.-based consulting and policy group, had an anonymous group of “education insiders” handicap the RTT-D competition.  They asked, “Based on what we know about the RTT-D competition now, which three districts do you think are most likely to win?”

The two most common answers were Los Angeles Unified School District and Hillsborough County (FL) Schools.  Seven other districts, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), received multiple votes.  No other school district in North Carolina (not even Wake County!) received a vote.

Of course, there is no guarantee that CMS will even apply for a RTT-D grant, but if they do, some say that they have a decent chance of snatching one of those bad boys right up.
