We’re anticipating a number of competitive Republican congressional primaries in North Carolina this year, but one on the Democratic side to keep an eye on is in the 10th District, now represented by Republican Patrick McHenry.

Four candidates have announced so far: Asheville mayor Terry Bellamy, N.C. Rep. Patsy Keever, college professor Heath Wynn, and “writer, musician, and dreamer” Tim Murphy.

The Bellamy-Keever matchup is particularly interesting. Keever was double-bunked with Rep. Susan Fisher under the new maps. Thus, Keever opted to forego another run for state House in favor of Congress. Bellamy has served as Asheville mayor since 2005.

Bellamy is the more right-leaning candidate on certain issues. She was one of two members of the Asheville City Council to vote against domestic partner benefits for city employees with same-sex partners. Reflecting one issue that doubtless will come up in the primary, Keever’s website touts her support for the benefits.

McHenry shouldn’t have any trouble hanging on for another term, but the Democratic primary could produce some fireworks.

H/T to Jonathan Kappler at the N.C. FreeEnterprise Foundation for pointing out this matchup.
