While Tar Heel football fans and Wolfpack basketball fans would be thrilled to be able to chant about a No. 10 ranking, none of us should be happy about the No. 10 ranking for the United States in the latest economic freedom index prepared by the Heritage Foundation and Wall Steet Journal.

The U.S. slips one spot in the latest ranking. Here’s the top 10:

1. Hong Kong
2. Singapore
3. Australia
4. New Zealand
5. Switzerland
6. Canada
7. Chile
8. Mauritius
9. Ireland
10. United States

That ranking jibes with a top-10 placement in the Fraser Institute’s last economic freedom report. Southern Methodist University’s Robert Lawson discussed key findings from that report in a speech last fall at Campbell University.
