Last night, Asheville City Council unanimously passed UDO amendments that would allow fruit and vegetable markets in residential areas. The markets would typically operate in parking lots of small churches or schools, but only during off-hours. One member of the public, speaking on behalf of the food-insecure,* was concerned that tailgate markets seldom accepted food stamps.

Members of council were concerned that hours of operation couldn’t overlap. Staff said they already get enough complaints about residential parking jams. Regardless, it was suggested that poor people might want to buy their locally-grown, organic produce when they leave the church. That would definitely be sunlighting, as most Sabbath-breakers in the blue-law Bible Belt at least try to avoid transgressing right under their pastor’s nose.

*You can now remove stigma from your vocabulary by placing a nondescript adjective after a noun. For example, the last sentence of this post should read, “That would definitely be work-displaying, as most of the Commandment-weak Bible-taught living in the religion-practiced South try not to be conscious-evident.”
