Gov. Bev Perdue suggested yesterday that next year’s congressional elections be suspended:

“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that,” Perdue said. “You want people who don’t worry about the next election.”

Senate leader Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, had some fun with Perdue’s comments in a release to the media:

“In light of Gov. Perdue’s support for suspending Congressional elections, I want to state clearly, on the record, that I do NOT support suspending our next gubernatorial election.”

Polls indicate that Perdue is among the least popular governors in the country.
