Last weekend, people from across the country came together to disobey the lunacy of permit requirements for lemonade stands. You could be forgiven for not realizing such activity was illegal, even on private property, but some authoritarians see no end to their legitimacy.

Lemonade Freedom Day organizers sought to bring attention to the imposition on innocent children, hounded for engaging in productive enterprise. The motto of the day: “Selling lemonade is not a crime.” This young girl knows what it’s about:

One example comes from a group of children in Maryland. Initially fined $500 for running a stand, only after immense public pressure did the county back down. But they are not alone, Forbes Magazine has counted at least nine recent examples of similar crackdowns.

The day, August 20, brought at least three arrests in Washington, D.C., but presumably this activity has only brought more attention to the cause.
