John Stossel’s latest column explores a perennial theme — the harmful effects of federal policies to help particular groups. He focuses in particular on American Indian tribes, noting that those that have received the most government assistance are plagued by high unemployment and lethargy. In contrast, the Lumbees of North Carolina never qualified for all this help and therefore worked to succeed on their own, and have done so to a remarkable degree.

Oh, but Rep. Mike McIntyre wants to change the law so the Lumbees will be eligible for government “assistance.” Maybe the House Republicans will at least have the good sense to say “no” to that.
