Winston-Salem’s city-county planning board ponders a sign ordinance.

Opponents turned out in full force, among them Gayle Anderson, president of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce:

“This community is speaking loud and clear that there are many more important things that we need to be doing for economic development.”

But here’s the proponents’ argument:

…Neighborhood advocates said that, contrary to business owners’ complaints, a stricter ordinance would actually help economic development, because new businesses are drawn to attractive-looking communities.

This is an argument I’ve heard before. It may be true to a certain extent, but it certainly takes a back seat to lower taxes and a business-friendly regulatory climate.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder….
